چکیده

We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being relatively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (∼<100 km s −1). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are based on a direct pixel-fitting technique that can accommodate composite stellar populations by calculating an optimal linear combination of input stellar templates. The original Palomar survey data were taken under conditions that are not ideally suited for deriving stellar velocity dispersions for galaxies with a wide range of Hubble types. We describe an effective strategy to circumvent this complication and demonstrate that we can still obtain reliable velocity dispersions for this sample of well-studied nearby galaxies. Low-mass Seyfert 2 Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We describe a sample of low-mass Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, having a median absolute magnitude of Mg = −19.0 mag. These galaxies are Type 2 counterparts to the Seyfert 1 galaxies with intermediate-mass black holes identified by Greene & Ho (2004). Spectra obtained with the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager at the Keck Observatory are used to determine the ce...

A Search for “dwarf” Seyfert Nuclei. Vi. Properties of Emission-line Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies

We use the database from Paper III to quantify the global and nuclear properties of emission-line nuclei in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies. We show that the host galaxies of Seyferts, LINERs, and transition objects share remarkably similar large-scale properties and local environments. The distinguishing traits emerge on nuclear scales. Compared with LINERs, Seyfert nuclei ...

Dwarf Seyfert 1 Nuclei and the Low-mass End of the Mbh −σ Relation

To examine the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy velocity dispersion for low black hole masses, we have measured the velocity dispersions of 15 Seyfert 1 galaxies from the catalog of Greene & Ho (2004). These Seyferts were selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have estimated black hole masses below 106 M⊙. The data are consistent with a straightforward downward extrap...

Near IR Spectroscopy of Active Galactic Nuclei . ⋆

Using the VLT together with the near infrared instrument ISAAC, we have obtained medium spectral and high spatial resolution observations of a sample of nearby Seyfert galaxies in the H-band. This band is particularly suited for stellar population studies since the stellar component dominates over the AGN nucleus. The H-band also includes the peak contribution from cool stars. The AGN spectra a...

A Search for “ Dwarf ” Seyfert Nuclei . III . Spectroscopic Parameters and Properties of the Host

We have completed an optical spectroscopic survey of the nuclear regions (r < ∼ 200 pc) of a large sample of nearby galaxies. Although the main objectives of the survey are to search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei and to quantify their luminosity function, the database can be used for a variety of other purposes. This paper presents measurements of the spectroscopic parameters for th...
